Research Lab Overview

In the midst of a period of major changes in the environment surrounding the energy industry, as evidenced by liberalization of the energy and electrical power markets, a heightened awareness of the problem of global warming, and diversification of lifestyles, the Energy Engineering Research Laboratory uses innovative basic technology to provide choices to the energy industry and to society. It maintains energy security by presenting diversified energy sources, and is contributing to the creation of highly efficient, clean, and low-cost new power and energy supply and demand systems, and to the transition to a recycling society.

Research Domains

The Energy Engineering Research Laboratory engages in balanced research and development of highly efficient, energy-conserving technologies that make effective use of fossil fuels and other diverse energy resources, technologies that reduce the burden on the environment through use of clean fuels and effective use of wastes, and technologies for reduction of thermal power plant costs. It aims for the creation of new power and energy supply and demand systems that are low-cost and environmentally sound. As a result, it successfully works through the energy industry, to provide the practical technologies sought by society, and to contribute to the stable development of a society with high energy security.

  • Research into operation and maintenance of coal-fired thermal and gas turbine combined cycle thermal power generation plants
  • Research into coal, biomass, and other gasification technologies, into low-grade fuel reforming technologies, and into environmental conservation technologies for coal-fired thermal power and other sources of power
  • Technologies for highly efficient energy conversion in power generation and thermal supplies, and technologies for generation of ultra-clean fuels
