With the aim of further improving the reliability of electrical power equipment in support of safe and secure communities,
we are undertaking comprehensive research into measures against the risks associated with IT failure and with natural disasters such as earthquakes,
heavy wind and rain, and lightning. This research covers means of supporting recovery efforts when disasters occur.
We also provide various other supports for the social and business risk management policies of the electric power industry.
For example, we are making specific recommendations for effective policy on measures against global warming, an issue of great social concern with which the electric power industry is closely involved.
We carry out overall evaluations of the Japanese approach to the deregulation of electric utilities, and formulate potential measures. We deal with measures to raise human performance to prevent breakdowns in organization and other problems.
We carried out a survey of residential customers' satisfaction with the customer service, price, supply reliability, and corporate image of electric power companies in three countries.

Through experiments with an impulse generator and field observations, we are elucidating the characteristics of lightning. We are also proposing effective countermeasures against lightning and working to confirm their validity both experimentally and theoretically.

Using hybrid testing that links computer simulation and vibration testing, it is possible to represent and assess the large deformations and damage to structures that occur in earthquakes without incurring large costs. This will contribute to improving the earthquake resistance of power facilities and social infrastructure, as well as helping to prevent earthquake damage.

In order to reduce natural disaster damage due to severe storms and assist in prompt recovery after disasters, we are developing a numerical weather prediction system to estimate the strong wind, heavy rain and snowfall caused by typhoons and atmospheric depressions with a lead time of two days.

We create teaching materials explaining the common characteristics of accidents and problems arising from human error, focusing on the causes of errors, preventive measures and so on, thereby fostering organizational safety culture.
