The Civil Engineering Research Laboratory
is an expert group that investigates the interaction between huge artificial structures
and natural phenomena and the challenges to solving global-scale problems. In
this laboratory, many experts in various fields including geology, soil, groundwater,
earthquakes, materials, structures, fluids, and meteorology carry out research
related to siting and construction, and hazard mitigation and maintenance of the
social infrastructure, mainly for power facilities. We also carry out research
and development relating to the nuclear fuel cycle backend such as transport and
storage of spent fuel, disposal of radioactive wastes, and recycling of discharged
materials from decommissioned power plants.
In Japan there still exist many social infrastructure problems such as mitigation
of natural hazards due to earthquakes and rain storms, effective management of
older civil structures, and city redevelopment to improveing the living environment.
As an academic organization we will contribute to people's safety and security
with challenging leading-edge research, as well as providing society with our
expertise for technological solutions. |
