Development of evaluation technology for liquid fuels as alternative fuels for gas turbines

Gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) is the most major system in thermal power generation because of its high thermal efficiency. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) has been used for almost all GTCC power plants. However, expanding of availability of liquid fuels including biofuels, oil sands and cracked petroleum products is desired to increase the energy security.

When using liquid fuels, the spray combustion system is employed for gas turbines. Overall phenomenon is affected by the three main phenomena, which are atomization, evaporation and combustion reaction. In CRIEPI, we clarify the effects of fuel properties on these three phenomena, and suggest improvement strategies depending on fuel properties.
