CRIEPI selects specific research projects from among the 800 to 900 it conducts each year to be featured in its Annual Research Report. Projects are selected based on the following criteria:

1. Demonstrates outstanding innovative, creative, academic, and technological quality, as well as economic relevance and potential for practical applications
2. Demonstrates timeliness in light of current social, economic and energy security conditions
3. Exemplifies CRIEPI's broad research capabilities and strengths in basic research
