CRIEPI was ranked 18th on the patent rankings of Japanese universities and research institutions compiled by the intellectual property consulting firm, IPB Corporation.

Using December 31, 2006 as the baseline date, the firm calculated the patent scores using a proprietary formula for each patent in force held by applicants. The top rankings were as follows: 1st: National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology; 2nd: Japan Science and Technology Agency; 3rd: Keio University.
