The Third WCRP International Conference on Reanalysis

February 8, 2008

From January 28 to February 1, the Third International Conference on Reanalysis was held in the convention hall on the Komaba Campus of the University of Tokyo. The conference was promoted by the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), CRIEPI and the University of Tokyo, with sponsorship from the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS).

The purpose of this expert meeting, attended by meteorological organizations and climate scientists, was to present the results of reanalysis of climate data and the advancements in technological development related to reanalysis, and to achieve greater sophistication in climate analysis.

The International Conference on Reanalysis has been held on two previous occasions: in 1997 in the United States and in 1999 in the United Kingdom. On this third occasion, the themes were based on Japanese 25-year Reanalysis (JRA-25), the results of joint research by JMA and CRIEPI. Attended by 83 people from 20 other countries, along with 177 participants from Japan, the conference featured 134 presentations (61 oral presentations and 73 poster presentations) and a panel discussion. The various presentation materials and the proposals assembled during the course of the conference will be published by the WCRP.

Yoichi Miyanaga, Director of CRIEPI's Environmental Science Research Laboratory, gave the opening address on the 28th, while Senior Research Fellow Junichi Tsutsui, who oversaw the joint research of JRA-25, gave a presentation on "Multiple Regression Analysis of JRA-25 Monthly Temperatures" on the 29th.

More than 500 researchers from 40 countries around the world are using the JRA-25 findings. JMA and CRIEPI created a climate map using JRA-25 data, published as the JRA-25 Atlas and distributed to participants at the conference.
