February 22, 2008

On February 21, the Socio-Economic Research Center held a Trilateral Japan, U.S., and European Researchers' Lecture Meeting at the Chiyoda Broadcast Hall with an audience of about 80 participants from manufacturers and research institutions.

Under the theme of "Initiatives in energy conservation in each country: outlines, best practices, and future issues," Senior Researcher Taishi Sugiyama talked about examples from Japan, Stephen Wiel, Director of the Collaborative Labeling and Appliance Standards Program (CLASP), talked about American examples, while Benoit Lebot, Climate Change Technical Advisor at the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Global Environment Facility (GEF) presented case studies from the EU. Following that, the Trilateral International Policy Proposal for Promotion of Energy Conservation from Trilateral Japan, U.S., and European Researchers was introduced, with questions and opinions from the audience.

The participants offered comments reflecting their expectations for the future of the program. For example, one participant stated, "I agree with the proposal. There are a number of proposals for the G8 meeting, and I hope as much information as possible will be made available with the aim of achieving synergies on this."
