Microbial impact on the behavior of radionuclides in the subsurface environment (part2) -Microbially induced dissolution of cobalt(Ⅲ) oxyhydrooxide in the shallow subsurface-

Radioactive Co-60 is an important contaminant known to migrate in subsurface aquifers. Cobalt oxyhydroxide, (Co(Ⅲ)OOH) has, however, very low solubility over a wide range of pH, suggesting it might be rather stable and immobile in an aqueous environment. In natural environments, there are many kinds of microorganisms, such as sulfate-reducing bacterium, have the ability to reduce many metals (e.g. Fe, Mn, U) directly and/or indirectly. Also, in the unsaturated zone, the redox condition changes seasonally between an oxic and anoxic state due to seasonal infiltration of oxygen-containing rain water from surface. This fluctuation in redox condition alters the geochemistry of environment in the subsurface, including microbial activities. In this study, we examine the dissolution of synthetic Co(Ⅲ)OOH through microbially mediated redox transformation (using sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio desulfuricans) under conditions simulating the unsaturated zone. Under anoxic conditions, Co(Ⅲ)OOH was transformed to precipitates of cobalt sulfide(CoSx), resulting from the reduction of Co(Ⅲ) to Co(Ⅱ) by D. desulfuricans. After the transformation, the CoSx precipitates were exposed to an oxic condition simulating the infiltration of rain water. Finally, insoluble CoSx dissolved into soluble Co2+ ion completely. These findings will be helpful to understand the microbial impact on radioactive Co-60 migration in unsaturated subsurface environments for contaminated sites and/or Low Level radioactive Waste repositories.
