PLUME RISE MODELS AND DISPERSION MODELS(DISPERSION PARAMETERS)APPROPRIATE FOR LARGE EMISSION SOURCE,E.G.,A THERMAL POWER PLANT WERE PROPOSED,BASED UPON FIELD EXPERIMENT DATA ON NUMEROUS PLUME RISE AND ATMOSPHERIC DISPERSION OF A LARGE-SCALE SOURCE PROVIDED BY DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN LITERATURE.AS A RESULT,A PREDICTION METHOD FOR ATMOSPHERIC DISPERSION OF LARGE AND SINGLE EMISSION SOURCE WAS ALSO DEVELOPED. (1) A PRACTICAL AND SIMPLIFIED CALCULATION FORMULA,APPLICABLE UNDER WINDY CONDITIONS(WIND SPEED:U GREATER EQUAL 2M/S)DURING THE DAYTIME WAS PROPOSED AS A PLUME RISE MODEL FOR LARGE EMISSION SOURCE,IN REFERENCE TO FIELD EXPERIMENT DATA OF CRIEPI(CENTRAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF ELECTRIC POWER INDUSTRY)AND TVA(TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY). (2) THE GAUSSIAN PLUME MODEL WAS APPLIED AS A DISPERSION MODEL FOR LIGHTWIND CONDITIONS AND WINDY CONDITIONS(U>0.4 M/S).THE CORRESPONDING DISPERSION PARAMETERS WERE CATEGORIZED INTO ATMOSPHERIC STABILITY CLASSES OR WIND SPEED CLASSES,BASED UPON TRACER TESTS DATA CONDUCTED BY NRIPR(NATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR POLLUTION AND RESOURCES)AND CRIEPI. (3) AS FOR THE PLUME RISE MODEL UNDER CALM CONDITIONS(U LESS EQUAL 0.4 M/S),THE BRIGGS FORMULA WAS APPLIED AND THE CORRESPONDING POTENTIAL TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS WERE OBTAINED USING THE OBSERVED DATA FROM VARIOUS POWER PLANT SITESIN JAPAN.A SIMPLIFIED PUFF MODEL PRESENTLY USED FOR PRACTICAL PURPOSESIN CALCULATING SHORT-TERM AVERAGE GROUND-LEVEL CONCENTRATIONS UNDER CALM CONDITIONS WAS APPLIED AND CORRESPONDING DISPERSION PARAMETERS WERE DETERMINED BY SO2 CONCENTRATION DATA IN THE VICINITY OF A POWER PLANT SITE.
