THIS PAPER DESCRIBES ON THE NEGATIVE FRICTION (N.F), THE BENDING STRESS AND LATERAL MOVEMENT INDUCED IN PILE BY THESURCHARGES SUCH AS THE SOIL FILLS. PARTICULARLY, THE FOLLOWING POINTS HAVE BEEN RESEARCHED: (1) THE BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SHEAR STRESS(N.F) ACTING ON THE PILE BY THE SIMPLE MODEL TESTS, (2) THE PROPOSAL OFTHE ESTIMATION METHOD ON THE EFFICIENCY OF PILE GROUP ON N.F, (3) THE FIELD MEASUREMENT OF N.F AND THE LATERAL MOVEMENT IN REAL PILE DUE TO SOIL FILL AND ITS DISCUSSION, AND (4) THE PROPOSAL OF THE PREDICTION METHOD ON THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE PILE AND THE GROUND,AND ITS VERIFICATION. THROUGHOUT THIS STUDY, THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS HAVE BEEN OBTAINED. (1) THE MECHANISM OF N.F IS CLARIFIED BY THE MODEL TESTS ON BOTH OFTHE SINGLE PILE AND PILE GROUP FROM THE EFFECTIVE STRESS POINT OF VIEW. (2) THE BRIEF ESTIMATION METHOD ON THE EFFICIENCY OF PILE GROUP ON N.F IS PROPOSED FROM THE THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS BASED ON THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS. (3) THE ACTUAL BEHAVIOUR ON N.F AND LATERAL MOVEMENT IN PILE IS RESEARCHED BY THE FIELD PERFORMANCE USING THE REAL STEELPILES, AND WE SHOW THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ESTIMATION METHOD ON N.F BASED ON THE EFFECTIVE STRESS, AND THE ADEQUACY OF THE RESPONCE DISPLACEMENT METHOD ON THE BENDING STRESS AND THE LATERAL MOVEMENT IN PILE. (4) THE NUMERICAL ANALYTICAL METHOD ON THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE PILE AND THE GROUND, WHICH INVOLVES THE SLIP PHENOMENA AND THE CONSOLIDATION OF CLAYEY SOILS,IS DEVELOPED, AND ITS USEFULNESS IS VERIFIED FROM THE COMPARISON WITH THE PREDICTED AND THE MEASURED VALUE ON BOTH ON THE N.F AND LATERAL MOVEMENT IN PILE.
