Since terahertz (THz) waves propagate in dielectric materials, there are possibilities that the THz waves are applied to nondestructive inspection and diagnosis using the scattering analysis. In order to improve the accuracy of the scattering analysis, it is important to take into account the spatial inhomogeneity of the incident wave on materials.
In this report, scattering of two-dimensional Gaussian THz beam by an infinitely long dielectric cylinder is investigated. Assuming that the size of the beam spot at the beam waist is sufficiently large compared with the wavelength of the THz beam, the expansion coefficients of the scattered fields are obtained analytically, where the parameters of the beam, such as the position of the beam waist and the size of the beam spot at the beam waist, are included. In terms of these expansion coefficients, some scattering patterns are plotted, and dependencies of the scattering patterns on the Gaussian beam parameters are considered.
