As countermeasures to scale deposition at the leading edge of a flow hole in a heat exchanger, oxygen and dispersant additions were studied. High-velocity scale-adhesion test results showed that pressure losses at quatrefoil-type specimens at 500 hours were smaller in the presence of 50 ppb oxygen or 10 ppb polyacrylic acid (Mw~25000) than without the additives. The measurements of electrokinetic potentials of 5-25 mm Fe3O4 at ambient temperature showed that iep (isoelectric point) of the particle was approximately 3.5 at ionic strength 1-10 mM and that the zeta potentials in the presence of more than 10 ppm polyacrylic acid (Mw~25000) were decreased by 5-15 mV in the whole pH range studied. It was concluded that the oxygen or dispersant additions would mitigate scale deposition. The oxygen concentration, molecular structure and molecular weight of dispersant and dispersant concentration should be optimized in future.
