To predict the probability of extreme meteorological events such as heavy rain and the change in the occurrence of extreme events with climate change, the authors have developed a method of estimating the probability density function (PDF) of a meteorological element. To evaluate the performance of the method in practical climatological prediction, it was used to predict the daily precipitation over drainage basins in the Kyushu region of Japan, where the predictors were reanalysis data for 21 years. In this study, the precipitation over drainage basins was estimated on the basis of radar AMeDAS composite precipitation (RAP) data. The method was applied to estimate the daily PDF for the months from June to October, for basins with areas of 20km2 to 2300km2. The climatological PDF, obtained as the average of the daily PDFs, is consistent with the observed precipitation. In the positive tail corresponding to heavy precipitation, where multiple regression analysis always underestimates the probability, the proposed method gives a sufficiently high probability. When the PDF was estimated using the predictors without meteorological parameters, such as cloud water, that are sensitive to precipitation schemes in climate models, the positive tail of the PDF decreased steeply. This suggests that an alternative predictor is required to assess the effect of climate change when using the output of a model different from that used in the reanalysis system.
