Electric utilities and social developments

Electric Technology Research Institute established in Komae City, Tokyo, as the central research institute for electric utilities in Japan.

1951

Nine electric power companies established following reorganization of electric utilities.

Economic research department added, and the name of the institute changed to Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI).

1952

Electric Power Development Co. established.
Federation of Electric Power Companies established.

Electric Economy Research Laboratory (later, Socio-economic Research Center) established, along with Electric Power Technology Laboratory.

1953

 

Agricultural Electricity Laboratory (later, part of Environmental Science Research Laboratory) established in Abiko City, Chiba Prefecture.

1957

Japan Atomic Power Co. established.

 

1963

Kansai Electric Power Co. completes Kurobe No. 4 hydroelectric power station.

 

1965

Electricity Utilities Industry Law established.

 

1966

First commercial nuclear power generation begins at Tokai Power Station.

Testing ground for field tests of power distribution systems and field test farm established in Akagi, Gunma Prefecture (later, Akagi Testing Center).

1968

 

 

1969

Japan International Energy Research Exchange (Japan IERE) established.

Civil engineering research department transferred from Komae to Abiko and expanded to form Technology Laboratory II (later, Civil Engineering Research Laboratory).

1970

 

 

1972

Okinawa Electric Power Co. established.

 

1973

Agency for Natural Resource and Energy established.
First oil crisis.

 

1974

Three laws concerning electric power-source siting established.

Ultra-High Voltage Research Laboratory (later, High Power Testing Laboratory) established to take over projects run by Ultra-High Voltage Research Institute.

1977

 

 

1978

Second oil crisis.

 

1979

Three Mile Island reactor accident occurs in the United States.

CRIEPI celebrates its 30th anniversary by hosting the first Future Energy Technology Forum.

1981

 

Nuclear Information Center established. (Operations transferred to Japan Nuclear Technology Institute in 2005.)

1983

 

 

1985

Nuclear fuel cycle project begins at Rokkasho site.

 

1986

Chernobyl reactor accident occurs in the former Soviet Union.

Human Factors Research Center established.

1987

 

 

1989

World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) established.

Information Communication Research Center established (reorganized as Communication & Information Research Laboratory in 1993; currently part of System Engineering Research Laboratory).

1992

International Conference on Environment and Development held in Brazil.

First Trilemma Symposium held. (Total of nine symposiums held up to 2000.)

1993

 

 

1995

Electricity Utilities Industry Law amended (liberalizing electricity supply, among other matters).

Office Support Center (later, Administrative Support Center) established in Komae, Tokyo, to integrate office works.

1997

COP3 held in Kyoto, and Kyoto Protocol adopted.

Advisory Council established.

1999

Electricity Utilities Industry Law amended (partially liberalizing electricity retailing, among other matters).
JCO criticality accident occurs in Tokaimura, Japan.
Nuclear Safety Network established.

Low-Dose Radiation Research Center established.

2000

Liberalization of electricity retailing commences.

50th anniversary of the founding of CRIEPI.
High Power Testing Laboratory established.

2001

Electricity crisis in California, United States.

CS promotive office established.

2002

Problems with records on voluntary inspection at nuclear power plants.

Head Office reformed as a group system with CS promotive head office.

2003

Privatization of Electric Power Development Co. (J-Power).
Electric power blackout occurs across large portions of North America.
Energy Basic Plan established.

Eight specialized research laboratories established thorough reorganization.
Solution Center for Environmental Issues established.

2004

 

NIC dissolved.
PD Center established.

2005

Kyoto Protocol takes effect.
Opening of Japan Electric Power Exchange.
Revision of seismic design criterion for nuclear power plants.
Kyushu Electric Power Co. obtains consent from local residents to utilize plutonium in LWR.

Center for Intellectual Property & Technology Licensing established.

2006

 

General projects "LWR plant life management" and "Global warming measures related research" started.

2007

IPCC published AR4 and shared Nobel Prize.
