The Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) started its history in 1951 at the initiative of Yasuzaemon Matsunaga, who founded it to realize his supreme ideals of pursuing truth using scientific methods and creating technologies that could contribute to the electric power industry and to society. Since then, CRIEPI has continued to provide technological assistance to the electric power industry as it supports the development and comfort of society.

One of the most serious problems the world faces today is climate change. To overcome this, we have to build a low carbon society and create new key technologies. CRIEPI is pursuing development of groundbreaking technologies based on colla-boration among researchers in a range of specialist fields. The three main areas of our research concern "the promotion of electrification," "energy conser-vation," and "the use of low carbon power sources."

CRIEPI's approach will be to intensify our research in each area and establish networks of knowledge that combine the various technologies in composite forms. In this way, we intend to meet the needs of society.

CRIEPI seeks to be a unique, irreplaceable research institution.
