MESSAGE
Since its establishment in 1952, Soccio-economic research center has dedicated to contributing to the electric power industry and society through research activities in social sciences.
As the global movement toward building a decarbonized society accelerates, Japan declared in 2020 its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. However, in the wake of surging fossil fuel prices caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the critical importance of ensuring stable and affordable energy supply has been reaffirmed. In 2024, discussions on the Seventh Strategic Energy Plan and the Electricity System Reform have been held with the outcomes expected to inform revisions to energy and climate policies as well as related markets. In light of ongoing technological and social innovations, coupled with the increasing fragmentation of the international community, it is essential to continuously reassess the design of these policies and markets.
Our center employs researchers with diverse expertise, including law, economics, statistics, policy science, business administration, electrical engineering, systems analysis and technology assessment. By integrating these diverse specializations and collaborating closely with our technical research divisions and centers, we will contribute to the continuous reassessment and support new challenges facing the electric power industry, such as balancing stable supply with carbon neutrality. Through these efforts, we are committed to the further development of society in 2050 and beyond.
